Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the current British Monarch's reign. Queen Elizabeth II was crowned Queen of the Commonwealth realms on February 6 1952 — although the coronation only took place on June 2 1953.

Her reign is the second longer in the history of British monarchs, hence the profusion of events taking place this year to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee. Because the Jubilee isn't celebrated on a precise day, events are spread out over the course of course of the year. The Royal family are and will be visiting the United Kingdom and some parts of the Commonwealth. The Queen herself was in Leicester on Thursday, first stop of a tour that will end in July.

Son règne est le second plus long de l'histoire des monarques de Grande-Bretagne, d'où la profusion d'évènement organisés cette année pour célébrer son Jubilée de Diamant. Le Jubilée n'était pas célébré lors d'un jour précis, les évènements sont répartis tous le long de l'année. La famille Royale sont en train et vont continuer leurs visites du Royaume-Uni et de certains états du Commonwealth. La Reine elle-même était jeudi à Leicester, premier arrêt d'un tour qui s'achèvera en juillet.

The Bank holiday week-end was chosen as the central week-end of celebrations. This extended week-end will see the Queen celebrated through the Big Jubilee Lunch (street parties and neighbours joining together) and a Pageant on June 3, the BBC Concert at Buckingham Palace (impressive line-up: Elton John, Tom Jones, Jessie J and Paul McCartney will be performing, amongst others), Beacons lightening and a Thanksgiving service.

Other celebrations included the exhibition of portraits of Queen Elizabeth II by Cecil Beaton at the V&A museum, in London. It includes many photographs of the Queen in the early years of her reign (up to 1980), one of which has been seen widely in the UK this year:

Le week-end du 2-5 juin a été choisi comme point culminant des célébrations, et un jour férié qui tombait la semaine précédente a même été déplacé pour allonger le week-end ! Ce week-end fêtera la Reine avec des manifestations comme le Big Jubilee Lunch (des fêtes de quartiers où tous les voisins mettent leurs tables dehors et déjeunent tous ensemble) et un défilé de bateaux le 3 juin, le BBC Concert à Buckingham Palace (avec une affiche impressionante : Elton John, Tom Jones, Jessie J et Paul McCartney seront de la partie, entre autres), l'allumage de nombreuses lanternes/balises et un service de remerciements.

D'autres célébrations ont et vont prendre place cette année, dont une exposition de portraits de la Reine par Cecil Beaton au Victoria & Albert museum, à Londres. Cette expo contient de nombreuses photos de la Reine au début de son règne (jusqu'à 1980), dont une à été reproduite partout cette année :
